Sometimes the best places are the ones you stumble upon without any expectations.

That was exactly how I felt about Benicia, California. I planned a simple day trip, but by the end of the day, I found myself wishing I had more time to explore. From its peaceful waterfront and charming downtown to its fascinating history and unforgettable bakery, Benicia quickly became one of my favorite small towns in Northern California.

A Peaceful Walk Along the Waterfront

One of my favorite parts of visiting Benicia was simply walking along the waterfront. The views of the Carquinez Strait were peaceful, and it was the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the scenery. I even caught views of one of the area’s iconic bridges stretching across the water, making for a beautiful backdrop during my walk.

If you’re looking for a relaxing escape from busy city life, Benicia’s waterfront is the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

Exploring Historic Downtown Benicia

Downtown Benicia is full of character. As I wandered along First Street, I loved admiring the historic buildings, locally owned shops, and inviting restaurants. Every corner seemed to tell a story, making it easy to see why this town has become such a popular destination for history lovers and weekend travelers alike.

It’s one of those downtowns where you can simply wander without a plan and discover something interesting around every corner.

One House Bakery: My Favorite Discovery

Without a doubt, my favorite discovery in Benicia was One House Bakery.

At first glance, it looks like a charming neighborhood bakery. But if you walk through to the back, you’ll stumble upon a storybook-like treehouse hidden among the trees and gardens. Just below it is a beautiful garden patio that feels like a secret escape from the rest of the world.

Inside, the bakery also features a cozy upstairs loft where you can relax and watch the activity on the main floor below.

I visited later in the day, so unfortunately most of the baked goods had already sold out. Even so, everything that was left looked incredible, and the pastries I purchased were absolutely delicious. Needless to say, I’ll definitely be coming back—and next time, I’ll make sure to arrive much earlier.

Benicia Capitol State Historic Park

One of the most interesting places I visited was the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park.

Many people don’t realize that Benicia once served as California’s third state capital from February 4, 1853, to February 25, 1854. During that time, lawmakers met here to help shape California’s future before the capital was permanently moved to Sacramento.

Unfortunately, the capitol building was closed during my visit, so I wasn’t able to tour the inside. However, walking around the historic building and learning about its role in California’s history was still a highlight of my trip.

I’ll definitely be returning someday to experience the interior.

A Beautiful Historic Church

Another memorable stop was one of Benicia’s beautiful historic churches. I was able to step inside and admire the peaceful atmosphere and stunning interior architecture. It was another reminder of how much history is woven throughout this small town.

Final Thoughts

Benicia completely exceeded my expectations.

It offers the perfect combination of waterfront scenery, fascinating California history, charming downtown streets, and unique local businesses that make you want to return again and again.

Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, relaxing waterfront walks, or simply finding a hidden bakery with a treehouse in the backyard, Benicia has something for everyone.

I already know I’ll be back—especially for another visit to One House Bakery.

If you’re planning a Northern California road trip, don’t overlook this charming waterfront town. It might just surprise you as much as it surprised me.
